It wasn’t easy for some student mothers at Al-Quds Open University to balance their academic commitments with caring for their children, especially given the lack of a supportive environment addressing their daily needs on campus. But this equation began to change when a group of young volunteers at the university decided to ask a simple question:
“How can we make the university experience more equitable for everyone?”
Driven by this motivation and in partnership with SFI, an initiative was born aiming to establish a model nursery within the university campus. It provides a safe and comfortable space for student mothers’ children and gives the mothers the opportunity to continue their education with confidence and stability.
Hamza Obeidat, coordinator of the university volunteer group, says the idea stemmed from the urgent need to provide a safe care space for children. He points out that the partnership with the Student Forum Institute was key in turning this idea into a tangible reality. He added:
“In addition to the nursery, we worked on developing an outdoor green space to provide students with a place to relax during breaks, which has enhanced the daily university life for students.”
The initiative also included installing a signboard bearing the university’s name, reflecting the volunteers’ vision to improve the university’s overall appearance and beautify the campus with simple yet lasting touches.
Dr. Mohammad Dhuwaib, head of the university branch in Bethlehem, expressed his appreciation for these joint efforts, highlighting the importance of the “Yabus Nursery” initiative implemented in partnership with SFI and its role in empowering student mothers. He also noted other initiatives such as planting the garden and providing seating areas for students, which contributed to improving the learning environment and strengthening the sense of belonging.
Dhuwaib expressed his gratitude for the national initiatives led by the Student Forum Institute and their ongoing efforts to serve the community, especially in Bethlehem Governorate, emphasizing that these initiatives have a tangible positive impact on daily life and contribute to building a more prosperous society.
At the conclusion of this experience, the university nursery initiative stands out as a pioneering example that can be replicated in other universities. It contributes to achieving educational and social goals and supports the continued academic journey of student mothers. This experience also highlights the importance of collaboration between institutions and youth groups in creating a more inclusive and sustainable educational environment.
