In one of Bethlehem’s neighborhoods, the light doesn’t come only from electric lamps — but from another kind of illumination. There, at the heart of a community in need of a helping hand, Al-Manar Foundation for Culture and Creativity stands as a true beacon, carrying within it a new hope and a cultural and social mission that focuses on building people before anything else.
Manar Qaraqe, the executive director, speaks passionately about a project that started with a simple question: How can we create new opportunities for youth, children, and women? How can we build a learning environment that doesn’t rely solely on books, but also on values — and on dreams? That’s how “Al-Manar” began: a youth-led cultural foundation working in education, initiatives, and psychosocial support, offering programs that strengthen individuals' ability to overcome everyday challenges.
Inside the foundation’s rooms, education pulses with a new spirit. Halima Karameh, the education coordinator, says they don’t rely on traditional methods — instead, they turn learning into a fun, interactive experience. From tutoring sessions during school breaks to a “school bag” system that helps students stay connected with their schools, the foundation works to create a safe, inclusive environment for every student facing academic challenges. Each week, they carry out activities based on the needs of both students and the community — a step toward holistic education that nurtures skills alongside knowledge.
And because knowledge begins with the soul, Quran memorization holds a special place within the center. Teacher Taghreed Al-Masaeed says, “We teach children that pleasing God is a path to awareness and light, and we expand their understanding through values that help them love life more deeply.”
Women, too, have a meaningful share in this noble mission. Haneen Qaraqe, a social worker, says the Women’s Unit provides psychological and economic support for girls and women, working to empower them so they can build their lives on their own terms.
As for the youth, the foundation embraces them through community initiatives in partnership with organizations like the Student Forum Institute, where they learn how to turn a simple idea into an impactful project that serves their surroundings and makes a difference.
“We believe that giving is our path to building a stronger community,” says Manar. And in every corner of Al-Manar, you’ll find a child learning, a woman rising, and a young person taking a step toward their dream.
And so, quietly and steadily, Al-Manar Foundation is writing a true story of hope.
This story was produced as part of the “Youth in Decision-Making” project, implemented by the Student Forum Institute in partnership with Norwegian People's Aid.
