Bethlehem – SFI organized today a discussion session with the Ministry of Local Government entitled “A Reading of the Proposed Election Law from the Youth Perspective”. The event was held in partnership with the Central Elections Commission and with the participation of a number of interested individuals and youth activists
The session hosted both Mr. Suleiman Abu Mufrah, the Director of the Ministry of Local Government in Bethlehem, and Dr. Ramzi Oda, the Secretary-General of the International Academic Campaign (IACA). The attendees discussed the key features of the proposed municipal election law.
The session addressed an explanation of the new law’s concept and its working mechanism, in addition to potential challenges that could arise with the implementation of this system. Particular attention was given to the issue of multiple lists emerging from the same political party or movement, and the impact this could have on vote fragmentation.
The discussion also touched on the current quota system and the criticisms directed at it. The importance of developing this system was emphasized to ensure greater opportunities for women's representation in local councils and to strengthen their active participation in the electoral process.
At the conclusion of the session, a number of recommendations were made. The most prominent was the need for the Ministry of Local Government to conduct a comprehensive review of the election law during its second reading. This review should include improvements to the quota system, an increase in women's representation, and ensuring political participation fairness in local elections.
This session is part of a series of activities aimed at raising awareness among youth about local governance issues and encouraging their engagement in political and community life.
